Pfranger picks up every piece, turns it, checks it, and places it. With hundreds of hand movements, even small time differences add up, he explains. Then there is the stress. "A countdown changes puzzling significantly." Those who are used to competitions continue to work in a structured manner even in the final minutes, whereas inexperienced participants often become frantic and therefore slower.
Even the familiar edge has no special rights. Although Pfranger sorts out the corresponding pieces at the beginning, he does not necessarily put them together first. If the edge is largely the same color, he starts with striking areas in the motif instead. He finds water and sky particularly difficult. "I have a visual impairment with blue, and many pieces look the same to me." In his private life, he therefore prefers to choose colorful motifs.

There isn't much space for sorting in a competition. For a 500-piece puzzle, the regulations allow a maximum of two A3-sized sorting mats. Viewing or enlarging the motif on a smartphone is prohibited.
In addition to the individual event, Pfranger is also competing in a four-person team. This includes family and friends who are accompanying him to Valladolid. They do not have fixed roles. Only after opening the boxes do they decide who will take on which part of the image. They have only distributed one task in advance: "I will not be sorting blue pieces."
You don't need a qualification for this World Championship
It is not just the world's elite competing at the World Championship. In the individual category, anyone who turns at least 14 years old in the competition year can register; no prior qualification is necessary.
The 2026 World Puzzle Championship will take place from September 16th to 20th in Valladolid and has recorded 2,411 entries from 72 countries. Up to 1,000 people compete in four groups in the individual preliminary round. The 95 fastest in each group reach the semi-finals. There and in the final, they have only 75 minutes for another 500-piece puzzle.
Even those who do not finish the puzzle in time are included in the ranking. The competition management counts the correctly assembled pieces, with only connected groups of at least three pieces counting.

In addition to the individual event, there are competitions for pairs and teams. Pairs solve a 500-piece puzzle in the preliminary round and a 1,000-piece one in the final. Teams of three or four people must complete two 1,000-piece puzzles within three hours. In the national ranking, eight people are allowed to work on a 1,500-piece puzzle at the same time.
Eleven people from Switzerland are registered, eight of them in the individual event. In addition, there are three pairs and two teams. Several people are therefore competing in different categories. All eleven are also part of the Swiss squad for the national ranking.
From a joke to more than 1,000 participants
Pfranger discovered speed puzzling in 2023 via the American YouTuber Karen Puzzles. She had documented her trip to the World Championship in Spain. Comparable competitions were hardly known in Switzerland at the time, so Pfranger decided to organize one himself. "And from this joke, the SPM was born," he says.
The number of participants rose quickly. According to the Swiss Jigsaw Puzzle Championship website, only 342 different people took part in 2024. In 2025, there were already 627. More than 1,000 people are registered for the sold-out edition on October 10th and 11th, 2026, in Winterthur.
Pfranger explains the growth with a network effect: those who participate talk about it, share photos, or recommend the competition to others. At the same time, speed puzzling is becoming more visible internationally. According to Pfranger, more than 40 national organizations have been formed in the past two years. The basic principle remains the same: you puzzle against the clock.
Old motifs remain a point of contention
Only Ravensburger puzzles are used at the World Championship. The manufacturer is the exclusive sponsor of the World Championship as part of a five-year partnership and provides all competition puzzles for the preliminary, semi-final, and final rounds.
In the preliminary round, the organization does not guarantee that the puzzles are from the current season, nor that they have not already been used at this or a previous World Championship. Only for the semi-final and final do the regulations require unpublished motifs.
Upon request, the organization became more specific for 2026: no previously published puzzle models or those used at a previous World Championship would be used in the first individual round. However, the regulations would still allow such motifs.
The organization explains the repetition in the previous year as a logistical problem. More than 40 different puzzle models were used at the 2025 World Championship. Despite its size, the Ravensburger catalog did not offer enough different motifs. No one knew in advance which puzzle would land on their table and whether it was new or already used.

Anyone who already knows a puzzle could assign individual image areas faster. However, the competition times alone do not show how great this advantage would be. In 2025, Wiktor Kacprzak set the world record for a 500-piece puzzle in a preliminary round with "Postcard from New York": 22 minutes and 2 seconds. In the final, Weronika Huptas won with an unpublished motif in 39 minutes and 44 seconds. However, the two puzzles were of different difficulty levels. The time difference alone therefore does not prove an advantage due to prior knowledge.
Pfranger describes reused motifs as one of the biggest points of criticism within the scene. After the 2025 World Championship, the Swiss organization received corresponding feedback from people at the top of the world rankings. The criticism does not remain internal. More nervous about the people than the puzzle
Pfranger does not train specifically for his World Championship debut, such as by memorizing motifs. For him, the experience and the fun of the event are the priority. The fact that he is only starting this year is due to the schedule. The competitions last from Thursday to Sunday and not a whole week like in 2025. This allows him to better reconcile the trip with his work.
However, it is not just the puzzle that makes him nervous before his first start. As an introverted person, he finds it difficult to approach unknown people, says Pfranger. Making new contacts makes him more nervous than the competition itself.
After the starting signal, there is no time for that. Then, for Pfranger, 500 pieces, 90 minutes, and every move count. Even with the blue pieces.
