Carrera Hybrid gets AI opponents and a new starter set

Carrera continues to expand its hybrid system. A major app update brings computer-controlled opponents. With "HyperDrive Fury", a new starter set is also coming onto the market.

I'm not surprised that Carrera is now improving the app so significantly. In my test from the end of 2024, this was already a key topic. Freewheeling and overtaking felt fresh. At the same time, it was clear: hybrid will live on updates. I even wrote at the time that a ghost car or AI variant would do the system good. This is exactly the step Carrera is now taking.

The update eliminates a central weakness

The new AI opponents are more than just a convenience feature. According to Carrera, they keep races exciting even when there is no one to play with. They come with different difficulty levels, characters and driving styles. This is important for Hybrid. Previously, the system worked particularly well if you were driving in pairs or working your way through career and practice modes. Now Carrera is taking solo play seriously.

The app interface has also been redesigned and puts career, free driving and race modes more centre stage.

The two new driving modes are also exciting. «Arcade» is designed to be more direct and accessible. «Simulation» focuses on longer braking distances and more demanding driving behaviour. There is also a mode without assistance. This fits in with the basic idea of Hybrid. Carrera is not simply selling a modern racetrack, but a system between toy, app and racing game. This is precisely why such software updates are not an accessory, but part of the product.

The update adds new driving modes and significantly finer settings for the driving behaviour to Carrera Hybrid.

In the current announcement, Carrera leaves one point open: Has the company also lowered the app's barriers to entry? In my test, the login requirement was one of the first moments of frustration. Whether this has changed remains unclear. Carrera only mentions a revised interface, more stable firmware and smoother processes.

«HyperDrive Fury» is useful, but not the highlight

The new set «HyperDrive Fury» seems to me like a more compact introduction to the system. It is shorter than the early hybrid sets «Speedway to Hell» and «Devil Drivers». Both offered 6.09 metres of track and two Porsche 911 GT3 Rs. «HyperDrive Fury» remains below this at 4.09 metres. In return, the set brings new cars in the form of the BMW M4 GT3 and the Ford Mustang GT3 and, with the narrow section, a track element that is intended to force more direct duels.

I see the set as a logical expansion rather than a major new start. The new route brings fresh tactics. The update makes the system more useful in everyday life. With AI opponents and new driving modes, Carrera Hybrid solo is much more fun. If Carrera takes software maintenance seriously, the system can grow. Otherwise, it remains a good idea with too much app dependency.

Do you think the update is the decisive step for Carrera Hybrid? Or does the system still have room for improvement despite the AI and new modes? Write your assessment in the comments.
