Cats love to sharpen their claws. In fact, regular manicures are particularly important for indoor cats. These bizarre scratching boards from our range, however, might just make your own toenails curl.
My home is a scratcher’s paradise. At least according to my cats, Jasper and Joy, who love leaving their mark on the walls. You’d think two vertical scratching boards, a mini scratching post and an XXL cat tree would be enough to tempt them away from my torn-up wallpaper.
But I don’t blame them. As indoor cats with balcony access, they don’t have the opportunity to sharpen their claws on actual trees. Since they both grew up in an animal shelter, this is nothing new for them. Even so, it’s imperative that indoor cats have scratching toys available to them. According to this cat psychologist, it’s best to go for ones measuring at least 80 centimetres long. That way, adult cats can stretch out on them properly.
You’ll find plenty of scratching toys on Galaxus – and not all of them are merely useful. While on the hunt for scratching boards, I came across some varieties made of cardboard. Now, don’t get me wrong. Cardboard’s great. Cats love cardboard. But answer me this. What? Is? That?
This board won’t be a smash hit
A scratchable turntable for cats? Really? Are cats supposed to be able to sharpen their claws on DJ Felix’s (lol) tiny vinyl record? I can already picture this thing falling apart the moment a cat gets its paws on it. Jasper would immediately snap off the pickup and send it flying through the air.
The skateboard that never moves
Just when you thought scratching boards couldn’t get any niftier, here comes a skateboard version. Not that your feline friend will be doing any cat flips with it. According to reviews, the skateboard doesn’t move. However, some cats seem to love it dearly and even sleep on it.
More tat than rainbow whimsy
This rainbow scratching board supposedly leaves kitties feeling like they’re on cloud nine. But dear me… even the product image is the stuff of nightmares. It definitely takes tackiness to a whole new level. Mind you, the Community isn’t quite as averse to it. Some reviewers just complain that it’s too small.
Cardboard with substance?
Two scratching toys that could grow on me at least a little are this cardboard TV and sardine can. Not only do they look stable, but they serve as hideaways for cats too. They’re also made by District 70, a brand whose slow feeders I’ve had good experiences with.
Yes, I’ve been slagging off all of these cardboard scratching boards, but should I buy one after all? Oh, screw it! The TV’s going on my watch list.
