You can read about this very well on the Apple website. I have the Pencil for the Ipad 10.
This model does not support the Apple Pencil. The Apple Pencil only works from the 3rd generation of the Ipad Air onwards.

Your choice is the Apple Pencil 1st Gen. This works with the Lightning connector on your iPad. Apple Pencil (1st generation)
The stylus must be connected to the iPad using a cable. It can only be charged with the cable.
This model is compatible with the following iPad models: iPad 2022 (10th Gen), iPad Air 2020 (4th Gen), iPad Air 2022 (5th Gen), iPad mini 2021 (6th Gen), iPad Pro 11 2018 (1st Gen), iPad Pro 11 2020 (2nd Gen), iPad Pro 11 2021 (3rd Gen), iPad Pro 11 2022 (4th Gen), iPad Pro 12.9 2018 (3rd Gen), iPad Pro 12.9 2020 (4th Gen), iPad Pro 12.9 2021 (5th Gen), iPad Pro 12.9 2022 (6th Gen).
There are two adapters included. Both connect the pen to a charging cable. One for Lightning to Lightning, one for USB-C to Lightning. In each case socket to socket. Charging directly on the iPad is only possible with the Lightning socket. I haven't tried out whether you can charge the stylus on the iPad with the USB-C to USB-C charging cable and the adapter, as I still have a 9th generation device.
