The battery life depends on the reading behaviour. With average backlighting, it can be as much as 500 pages. But it can also be twice as many pages. If you read for 2-3 hours a day, the battery will last a good 3 weeks.
This phenomenon happens from time to time for inexplicable reasons. Sometimes you just pay for the name.
After that, everyone is free to buy what they want... if people want to spend an extra 70, that's their problem after all.
