I plugged in 1* Play:1 for the bathroom and Play:5 directly into the powerline in the not really small kitchen/dining room... Blowing Mind!

The Play:1 rocks the bathroom in mono so hard the tiles almost fall off, and would
be enough for the dinner/kitchen. But the Play:5 logically fills up the almost 100m2 with stereo better.
Setting up and using the software is really super easy. The Sonos WLAN in the house can even be used with the installed SonosAPP on smartphones, tablets, etc., as each Sonos component automatically results in a radio network extension. However, stream failures are to be expected with large data traffic on this 54-bit network.

I will probably scrap my aging hi-fi system, except for the record player, and integrate it with the Sonos:Connect into the Sonos system, which still needs to be expanded with a Play:5. I hardly think that a SUBwoofer will be necessary then.

By the way: if you put your entire iTunes music collection on a NAS or share the corresponding directory on your computer, you can enjoy the fact that even the playlists from iTunes are recognised by the SonosAPP!

If you don't want to mess around with your network, simply plug your collection on your music player (e.g. iPod) into Play:5 via the analogue 3.5mm and distribute the sound to the entire Sonos setup. Any other Android/iOS device with WLAN can feed the music collection directly.

As you can see, I am "slightly" enthusiastic and can therefore also cope with the relatively expensive price. The value of the system lies less in the components and more in the idea and the versatile use of the system.

< 5min and you can already enjoy impressive sound quality. In combination with the free apps for iPhone, iPad (Android end of March), listening to music is child's play and can be controlled from anywhere in the house at any time.

Plus: you can even set various alarms/sleep timers.

Powerful, chic loudspeaker at a fair price

The Play:5 was my entry into the world of Sonos, after having studied the system extensively. Until now, I listened to my music via SoundSticks II from Harman/Kardon. These still deliver a really good sound experience. However, I was tired of having to constantly connect my laptop via audio cable for playback. In addition, my iTunes library was on an external hard drive. So this also had to be connected to the laptop. Too many cables, too little spatial flexibility.

With the Play:5 and Sonos, I now have a system that is very easy to use. The setup was a breeze, the app on the Mac guides you step by step. Everything is explained very well. I then moved the iTunes library to a NAS. This way I can also control the music independently of the laptop (e.g. with the iPhone app). That is definitely a big advantage.

The sound is extraordinarily good. I don't have the feeling that the level of the Play:5 is strained. The bass also comes across well. I'm already planning to buy a second Play:5 to set up real stereo. This is possible with Sonos and, according to test reports on the Internet, will contribute to a significant improvement of the sound experience.

Design and workmanship are excellent. The Play:5 is made of high-quality and very well manufactured plastic and makes a very solid impression. Thanks to WLAN operation, it also only needs one power cable. This means it can be placed relatively discreetly. Sonos also supplies a flat network cable and an audio cable with the Play:5. The latter can be used to connect other playback devices directly to the Play:5.

The network cable is required to connect the Play:5 to the router. This is only necessary if Sonos is to set up its own WLAN network for music in addition to the actual Internet WLAN.

    Pro

    • Sound (can be expanded to stereo with second Play:5)
    • Design and workmanship
    • easy set-up
    • beautiful apps for mobile devices
    • Now also works in the existing Internet WLAN (no connection to the router necessary)
    • Sonos system can be flexibly expanded at any time, you can start small

    Contra

    • Mac app looks old-fashioned
    • when importing iTunes playlists, the folder structure is not taken over

Top product at a great price

I now have 2x Sonos Play 1 for the bathrooms, 1x Sonos Play 5 for the balcony and Sonos Connect for the hi-fi system (Rotel components and B&W CM10 speakers).

Here I only rate the Sonos Play 5:
    - Unbeatably easy installation,
    as with all Sonos products.
    - Top workmanship
    - Sonos App still has a few weak points, but it's currently by far the best and most sophisticated system of its kind.
    - Elegant, timeless design
    - Sound: I would like to write a few sentences about this. For the size of the speaker, the volume, bass and sound quality are really good. However, due to the price of almost 400.- for the speaker, I would have expected a little more detail in the mid-range. Therefore not 5 stars. And of course the quality is not comparable with a high-quality floorstanding speaker. So if you want to set up a complete hi-fi system with Sonos, which is really expensive, you should rather buy individual hi-fi components and connect the Sonos Connect to them. Of course, this is ultimately a matter of taste and up to everyone to decide what they prefer.

The Play:5 is my first Sonos component.
The good reviews are not by chance:
    + looks chic
    + workmanship
+ Quick and easy to set up
    + Intuitive operation, great app
    + Soud volume great
    + Input socket

    Negatives:
    -
Quiet buzzing/beeping (probably from the power supply) when it is quiet and you hold your head in front of the unit.
    - Sound good, but the quality is not outstanding - there is a little noise in songs with interruptions.

I am totally satisfied with the Play:5, would buy it again. I will certainly buy more components...

    Yes, but

Basically good device. Unfortunately, problems with the basses occur now already with the second replacement device. Short-term failures of the bass playback. Seems to be a known problem. Positive: The device has so far always been replaced free of charge by Sonos, although the official warranty period had expired. However, the procedure is very tedious.

    Pro

    • Very easy setup
    • Very good sound (when it works ;) )

    Contra

    • Second replacement device again with bass problems

    powerful sound!
I find the alarm clock function great
unfortunately, you can't stream pandora or last.fm on sonos in switzerland.
but the integration of NAS (synology) is super fast and easy.
I will only set up my flat
    with sonos (playbar and sub).

Has worked perfectly for years and now has 7 Sonos systems and TV Bar. Had to set the wireless channel once in a while but otherwise no problems. I also use Deezer for online music. Top. Operation with tablet and mobile (Android, iPhone, Windows, Windows Phone).

I can only agree with everyone else who gave it 5 stars...it's perfect!

I control the box via iPhone, iPad and Mac, I stream the music wirelessly via bridge from my Qnap server.

Everything is easy to set up and operate,
just like Mac users want. I don't know what problem "ritschre" has that he only gives one star. Anyone who is familiar with this system will quickly realise that streaming is only possible via LAN or WLAN in connection with a bridge. You should inform yourself beforehand.

I used to have Airport Express and was annoyed by the endless sound interruptions...that's why it went into the bin and I had to get a Sonos.

Of course the system is expensive, but great things cost something and I'm willing to buy something expensive if I don't have any more problems.

Simply ingenious, ingeniously simple. Finally, a flexible Multiroom system at an affordable price. Installation absolutely simple, even for IT laymen. Operation via iPod, iPhone (3 & 4), Windows7 (64bit) and Sony tablet works flawlessly. Watch out with Linksys DHCP server!

the sound of the box is ok

    Weak points:
-The box must be connected to the router via ethernet or a bridge must be purchased.

-It is not possible to stream system audio (only internet radio, but audio from grooveshark,
    youtube etc does not work).

not recommended for mac users! complicated cumbersome PC oriented. would not buy again.

recommend airport express and Airfoil for mac users. cheaper and more user friendly / open.

Our Sonos player has already broken down after just over 2 years. Cost estimate for repair: CHF 378.00. An expensive fun for this limited quality.
