1x2 Function: You can switch 1 signal source, such as a receiver, to 1 of 2 possible outputs, such as a TV or projector. Parallel output from both outputs is not possible. The significant advantage over a splitter is that the TV and projector do not interfere with each other during the handshake. For example, if the projector only supports 720p and the TV supports 1080p, a splitter would also limit the TV to 720p.

2x1 Function: You can switch 2 signal sources to 1 output device as needed. For instance, a receiver or a DVD player can be connected to a TV. With the DisplayPort switch, you can switch bidirectionally at the push of a button, allowing you to send the signal from the receiver or the signal from the DVD player to the TV. The switching is done manually, not automatically.
