Can I have the sound in parallel (i.e. at the same time), i.e. via HDMI on the TV and via the analogue on the receiver, or do I only have the sound on one channel and the other is muted?

That is exactly the purpose of this part. Audio runs normally via HDMI, additionally you have audio via the audio interfaces of the unit. But only one of them is active at a time (digital/Toslink or analogue).
