Can i just connect the headset to the ps4 controller without the mixer (as i already have the astro a50 connected with the opticel cable and would like to use the astro a40 as a backup headset when the battery of the other one is empty)?

Yes, the headset can be plugged directly into the controller. Then set in the audio menu of the PS4 whether everything or voice chat should run via the headset.
