Can I use this connector in the opposite direction? i.e. connect a DVD player to a BENQ GV1 projector which only has a USB-C input?

Hello,

No, this is not possible. The cable only works if you connect USB-C to a laptop (or any USB-C enabled device that meets the requirements) and to the HDMI interface for the monitor/projector etc.
