Can the monitor also be paired with older Macbooks? For example, the MBP Retina (2014), which only has USB-A or HDMI.

It is certainly compatible, but I would recommend a 4K UHD 3840x2160 pixel screen, because the text display is much better with it, especially small fonts are displayed razor sharp, such as one:
