Can the TN-423 toner be used in the drum unit and is the drum unit even needed if you want to install the TN-423?

The drum unit is mandatory for your Brother printer. Both TN-421 and TN-423 can be used with the DR-421CL drum unit. The only difference between the Brother TN421 and TN423 toner cartridges is the yield, i.e. the number of pages they can print.
