Can you also use it as a pure black-and-white laser printer, i.e. operate it only with the black toner and leave out the expensive colour toner?

Yes - Removing the ink cartridges does NOT work, then the printer does not work. However, if you set the default setting of the printer driver to black and white when setting up the printer on the PC/Mac, everything is printed in black and white, even if it is in colour on the screen, so the colour toners are practically not used up.
