Could it be that the thumb buttons would not have to be pressed with the tip of the thumb but rather with the first joint (i.e. that it is meant to be and you would just have to get used to it)?

I don't know how it is planned either, but I very quickly got used to operating the buttons with my thumb joint.

I think that the controls are operated with the thumb joints, at least that's how I do it.
