do the monitors have to be special monitors in order to operate them with the macboox m1? because i have hadmi cables on the monitors but it still doesn't work.

No, but the macOS InstantView software must be running. Normally it displays an image from which you can start it. Alternatively, you can download the latest version here: https://www.siliconmotion.com/downloads...
