Have I understood this correctly? I can connect the link to my cam via (mini-USB -> USB) cable. But do I then need an additional cable? Which cable do I still need?

Not really. The camera is connected via HDMI and the USB end belongs in the computer.
You need an HDMI cable with the right connection for your camera: Full Size, Mini, Micro
