I am looking for a large external storage device for my Huawei P9 Plus to back up photos from the camera during holidays without a PC. Does Sandisk Extreme PRO USB SSD (256GB, USB 3.1) run with USB OTG on the smartphone?

Your phone has a Type C connection, the stick has a Type A connection: you need an adapter accordingly,
Alternatively, a USB memory device with an additional Type-C port: https://www.digitec.ch/de...

You may still have to format the stick.
You may also need to clarify with the phone whether the 256 GB is compatible.
