i have a Samsung TV without headphone output. can i connect this adapter to the optical output and thus operate the headphones via the 3.5 mm jack plug?

No! I thought so too. You need a converter. This connector does not change the signal from optical to analogue but only from optical toslink to optical 3.5mm.
