This can happen, even with mice with cables.
Did the "independent" scrolling occur with a certain programme, e.g. Excel?
Did you have many programmes open at the same time?
Shortly before the automatic scrolling occurred: what was "done" on the PC? For example, did you enter the same command several times ("Page Down") etc.?
Where was the bearing point / the cursor?
