I still have a plan directly with Nordvpn. If I buy it here now because it's on sale, does the licence run from the date of purchase or can I only activate the licence key in a year's time and the year counts from then on?

You can redeem keys in your account (Redeem). They are then added to the current plan and the term is extended accordingly.
