Hello. I'm not familiar with the ECM-G1. It seems to be more of a vlogger mic: the mic stays at a distance of 1m max from the mouth. With the ECM-M1, I also use the ECM-B10 which impresses me a lot given its small size (I have 2 cameras: the A6600 and the FX30, hence the 2 microphones) This microphone is rather directional, but it has 3 possible sound pick-up selections: 1) in front. Really front, great. 2) front + left and right (quite similar to the ECM-G1 I think) and here again, it's very good. 3) all around and therefore behind the microphone too. I'm impressed. When I speak from behind the mic with position 1, I can hardly hear myself in the recording. In position 3, however, I can hear perfectly. Here, the ECM-B10 is probably superior to the ECM-G1. BUT THESE TWO MICROPHONES ARE IN MONO. With the ECM-M1, I wanted something close to the ECM-B10, but in stereo. Finally a stereo mic that's SMALL and light! The ECM-M1 is even smaller than the ECM-B10! But it has 8 pick-up modes. There are 3 stereo modes: a) classic left-right (without the sound in front and behind) b) stereo but with the sound in front of the mic (left channel) and the sound behind the mic (right channel) and c) stereo left-right but with the sound all around the mic. And then there are 5 monophonic modes: d) more sound at the back of the mic e) sound all around (like c but in mono) f), g) and h) always more directional in front of the mic. f) being as far forward as possible. The sound is good. But it should be noted that, like all stereo microphones, there is more audible hiss in stereo mode. This is to be expected. All these mics are of course plug and play on Sony equipment via the Hot Shoe socket. (They will therefore work very well on an A6600, A6400 (analogue) or A7 (analogue or digital depending on the age or model of the camera) or an FX6, FX9, FX3 or FX30 (analogue or digital depending on your preference). In short, if you want to record sound close enough to you in mono (vlogger), the ECM-G1 should do the job. Be sure to plug the audio out hole if you're not using it! (eg little bit of goofball) It can cause a parasitic noise because the wind could pass through there too... But with the ECM-B10 (still in mono) you'll have more options, depending on what you want to record (it's great for vlogging, but also for capturing a distant ambient sound).But with the ECM-B10 (still in mono) you'll have more options, depending on what you want to record (it's great for vlogging, but also for capturing distant ambient sound, or even behind the microphone) and finally the ECM-M1, which has the added advantage of stereo, but also works very well in mono... Please note that all these microphones are good, given their small size, but they won't replace, for an interview for example, a real HF tie microphone or a microphone placed just above the head. Here's how to attach the microphone to a compatible camera:
-Take the connector protection cap off this unit.
-Unlock by rotating the locking disc and attach this unit to a camera.
-Turn the lock disc towards LOCK to securely attach the unit.
-Check the position of the DIGITAL/ANALOG switch of this unit.
-Operate the camera to start recording.

When you connect this unit to a camera, the audio input is automatically switched from the built-in microphone to the external microphone. If your camera is compatible with the digital audio interface of the multi-interface shoe, make sure the switch is set to "DIGITAL". If this is not the case, set the switch to "ANALOG".
