At my home, reception is possible without the antenna extended, but the choice of channels is limited.

At my location (Laufen), I can receive all stations from Switzerland with the antenna retracted, stations from Germany only partially.

If you have a good line of sight to the transmitter site, it may be sufficient to mount the antenna without extending it, but a fully extended antenna is still recommended for reliable, interference-free reception.
