The lens is excellent for land animals, used during 2 weeks in Namibia. Less good for birds in flight, but that is difficult anyway.

Yes, the lens is compatible with a D5500. No problems so far. I haven't noticed any AF problems yet either. Of course this lens is a compromise solution: light intensity and sharpness are sufficient, VR works amazingly well, the equivalent 450mm at full zoom are really great. In my opinion, it is absolutely suitable as an all-round lens, but I cannot say whether it is also suitable for your expectations regarding animal photography.
