One upload of blinken lights worked, now I only get: avrdude: verification error, first mismatch at byte 0x0042 0x48 != 0x83 avrdude: verification error; content mismatch avrdude: verification error; content mismatch Firmware bug? Software bug? Dead on arival?

No, I was not connecting anything but the Arduino board. Got a replacement board, as presumably the Arduino Uno
is faulty..

Are you connecting directly to the LED, or using resistors as well? If working from the manual that comes with the kit, which experiment are you trying? I don't gave my copy with me at the moment, but can check when I get home.
