Received the thing today, plugged it in between the laptop and the projector, works well, the sound on the mixer is good quality. BUT! I unplugged the HDMI cable from the laptop and plugged it back in later. The laptop died immediately! Could it be that this Lindy HDMI Audio Extractor is feeding voltage back into the HDMI?

No, a correctly built HDMI audio extractor must not feed any voltage back into the HDMI.
If your laptop has died as a result, there may be a defect or faulty design.
