The alarm clock hasn't rung for a few days, despite being in the ON position, and there's a sleep symbol (Zzzz) next to the alarm time, but I can't work out what it means.

I don't know what Zzzz means, but I would take the batteries out and reprogram them.

The sleep symbol (Zzzz) actually comes after snoozing. Try turning the alarm clock (alarm off) and then turning it again (alarm on). If it doesn't help, I would remove the battery and put it back in.
