The sound is loud and clear. Maybe try another battery first? That would be my tip too. If I remember correctly, when the batteries are flat, the sound stops first and then the display switches off.

Have you changed the batteries? Otherwise, the alarm clock is probably defective because no settings can be made on the sound.
