the Ultraslim 2013 sometimes has the version labelled D8Y...etc and sometimes D9Y...etc. Can you use a D9 for the same laptop if you previously had a D8?

There is no functional difference between D8Y and D9Y. Both designations belong to the HP 2013 UltraSlim Docking Station, and all technical data, connections and compatibility are identical.
The designations D8Y... and D9Y... are internal HP serial numbers that vary by production batch or region.
