What are your experiences with scanning photo images? Do they become grainy?

I can't quite explain what is meant by grainy, because I've never had a scanner that delivered a - from my point of view - grainy result. If a photo is grainy after scanning, it is usually because it is printed on paper, which is supposed to prevent it from being digitised.
I have been using this scanner professionally for some time and am very satisfied with it.
