What is the difference in the colour variant BK - or Y,M,C, ink? I have an HP Officejet 5740... Which one should I take?

BK stands for Black and the other cartridge is the colour cartridge :-)
Maybe your printer shows which cartridge is empty, either in the display of the printer or in the HP window when you print, you can look at the status info.

For the HP Officejet you need both cartridges HP62 BK (Black) and HP62 C/M/Y (Cyan/Magenta/Yellow).
HP 62 BK for approx. 200 pages . HP 62XL BK approx. 600 pages
HP 62 C/M/Y approx. 165 pages. HP 62XL C/M/Y approx. 415 pages.
