Moriarty the Patriot tells the backstory of the recurring character in Arthur Conan Doyle's crime series: the arch-villain Jim Moriarty. The BBC transplanted Doyle's distinctive characters into modern-day London, bringing new glory and shine to the cult series. The young James Moriarty is a mathematics professor in 1870s London and is far from satisfied with the social inequalities of his time. From this dissatisfaction arises the idea of a citizen's militia - a kind of private army fighting against discrimination, which, however, does not always use legal means to achieve its goals. Moriarty the Patriot depicts the journey of the good citizen James to the arch-villain Moriarty. It's a wonderful series to sweeten the wait for the new season of Sherlock and provides insight into why Moriarty is who he is.
