Author's Text
Scott McCloud, born in 1960, is an American who only began to take an interest in comics at the age of 15. Before that, he thought he was too old to develop an interest in picture stories. Fortunately, his school friend Kurt Busiek set him straight, allowing him to make a career choice that he, as he himself says, has never regretted. In 1982, he moved to New York and started working in the Production Department at DC Comics. In his spare time, he dedicated himself to his first series, "Zot!". In March 1984, it finally happened: "Zot!" began to be published as a monthly comic and was awarded Best New Series at the San Diego Comic Convention the following year, the largest and most important festival in the USA. For his work on "Zot!", McCloud also received the Russ Manning Award for Most Promising Newcomer. Alongside "Zot!", he created the superhero parody "Destroy!", which was particularly well-received by other artists and writers, earning him the reputation of having invented the comic of the 1990s. In 1992, McCloud received the coveted Inkpot Award. A year later, "Understanding Comics" was published, which quickly became a bestseller in Germany among standard works of secondary literature and has since seen numerous reprints by Carlsen Comics. A CD-ROM version of the book has also been released in America. Scott McCloud currently lives in New England with his wife Ivy, daughter Sky, and their dogs Zoe and Muddie, and he teaches at various American universities on the topics covered in "How to Read Comics Right".

"Disguised as an easily readable comic, Scott McCloud's simply written volume deconstructs the secret language of comics while revealing secrets of time, space, art, and the cosmos. The smartest comic I've seen in a long time. Bravo!" Art Spiegelman.
