Tala lives freely and unbound with her family in the wilderness, even in winter when the nights are long and cold. Her best friend is the albino mare Saphira, with whom she hunts small animals, trying to follow in the footsteps of her father Pollo, the chief and leader of the tribe. However, he prefers to take the young ones hunting. Saphira also has a tough time and is excluded from the herd by the lead stallion Odin when she becomes too curious and unruly once again. When raiders attack the camp and steal the winter supplies, Tala and Saphira suddenly become the tribe's only hope for survival.
