Michael Graf von Matuschka
German, Mario Graf von Matuschka, 2024Product details
The Silesian administrative lawyer Michael Graf von Matuschka was murdered on September 14, 1944, in the Berlin-Plötzensee prison as a consequence of the attempted coup on July 20. Through intensive research, his son Mario has created an impressive portrait of his father by evaluating various sources. This search for the father represents a unique contribution to the memory literature of the women and children of July 20, 1944. Additionally, Gerhard Ringshausen demonstrates in his contribution "Resistance Fighters as Martyrs" that Matuschka, as someone aware of the coup plans, belonged to those resistance fighters who turned against the dictator as devout Christians and died in faith. Around the year 2000, they were included in the martyrologies of both churches, but the path to this recognition was long and is presented here for the first time. The essay concludes with the dual biography of the Protestant martyr Hans Bernd von Haeften and the Catholic Michael Graf von Matuschka, emphasizing that the spiritual foundation was a crucial element of the resistance.
