Mies van der Rohe
German, Augustin Ferrer, 2019Product details
Ludwig Mies van der Rohe (1886-1969) was one of the most important architects of the modern era. Like few others, he shaped our understanding of modern architecture. Van der Rohe was already a world-renowned architect when he took over the leadership of the Bauhaus in Dessau in 1930. He had made a name for himself internationally with the German Pavilion at the 1929 World Exposition in Barcelona and other buildings. However, in August 1932, the Bauhaus was closed at the request of the National Socialists. In 1938, he emigrated to the USA, where he taught and ran a successful architecture firm. In the 1960s, he received the commission for the New National Gallery in Berlin. In the comic, Mies van der Rohe recounts his life to his grandson during a flight to this construction site—an intense life, ambitious and successful, but overshadowed by two world wars and always accompanied by the need to hide his homosexuality.
