I drink my coffee from it. I don't know if thick smoothies fit through it, but I think the opening is too narrow, so it wouldn't work well. You can take the lid off and drink the smoothie. It just makes the screw cap dirty, which probably leads to it leaking.
Personally, I would recommend a cup that has a simple hole to drink from. I would only use this one for normal liquid drinks.
