Helpful answer
ChatGPT says the following, hope that helps:

🔍 1. check basic causes

✏️ a) Pencil slips or is not gripped at all
→ This is usually due to the clamping mechanism:
Gripper arms (clamping jaws) dirty or sticky due to graphite dust or wood abrasion.
🔧 Solution:
Pull off the crank and carefully pull out the clamping jaws (works without tools).
Clean with a fine brush or cotton bud.
Apply some silicone spray or graphite spray (not oil!) to the moving parts.

⚙️ b) Crank turns, but nothing happens
→ Then the milling mechanism is blocked or worn.
Check whether the milling head rotates freely when no pencil is inserted.
If it is stiff:
🔧 Solution:
Hold device upside down and carefully blow out or clean with compressed air spray.
If you see pieces of wood or pencil stuck in the cutter, carefully remove them with a toothpick or tweezers.
Then apply a drop of silicone spray to the axle and crank through empty several times.

🧩 c) Pencil is sharpened on one side or irregularly
→ Then the milling cutter block is displaced or worn.
This happens if the machine has been dropped or if very hard pencils (e.g. 8B or H) have been pressed hard.
🔧 Solution:
Remove the milling head (usually with two small screws on the side).
Check whether the sprocket is worn or displaced.
If heavily worn → Insert a replacement cutter (Caran d'Ache spare part available from specialist dealers or directly from the manufacturer).

🪶 d) Chips jam or do not come out
→ Often a piece of shavings simply jams the ejector.
Empty the container and clean the opening with a small brush.
Lightly tap or blow out the appliance - do not use force.

🧽 2. cleaning & maintenance (recommended every few months)
Empty the chip container.
Clean the milling cutter with a brush.
Apply a drop of silicone spray to moving parts.
Sharpen a few old pencils to distribute the grease evenly.

🧰 3. if it still does not work
Caran d'Ache offers repair services for mechanical models - especially for the metal models (they are considered "repairable for life").

At the back of the handle is a little thumb screw. Make sure its set correctly, its adjusts the sharpness of the pencil!
