Can this product be controlled via app without Hue Bridge? If not, why is that not in the description, and how and what else can be set on it?

If you like tinkering & programming yourself, search google for zigbee modules.
Or buy the HueBrige with free app for iOs/Android.
Or return the high quality one and use the money to buy a cheap one with an extra remote control that never goes where you need it, that needs an extra battery that runs out when it doesn't fit. Quite apart from
I've been through this and like the Hue system - which needs the bridge once - but is easy to expand afterwards.
