I would like my two 27'' monitors to hang as far back as possible on the edge of the table. Is this possible - or what is the smallest possible distance to the back of the table?

It is possible, but you will have a bit of trouble getting the right setting at first. It's a bit of a trial and error game but it will definitely work.
