Is it possible to use this product without connecting it to the TV via HDMI or an intermediate box (sync box)? For example via the Hue Sny app. Or does the TV have to have a free HDMI spot?

Sure, that works. For me, it runs via the Hue app on a Samsung TV. I think it should also run on a PC, again with an app.
