Since the plants only need water and light from above anyway, I assume I can put it in a closed "box" in the kitchen? Because then the bright light would not be noticeable or disturbing.

The problem is that a timer switches on and off. I think this gives too little light, as the system depends on as much light (daylight) as possible... Try it... ;-)
