The double rim profile prevents litter and urine from spilling out. Cats are naturally very clean animals. However, being house-trained is not innate and must be learned. To help young cats learn to use the litter box, it is advisable to initially place a litter box in several rooms. Once the cat is accustomed to using a litter box and is older, the number can be reduced. In general, there should be at least as many litter boxes in a home as there are cats.
