If for some reason the chip recognition does not work, is it possible to have a "manual" mode? I'm worried about what I've read on the internet about the lifespan of these cat flaps.

Yes, this is indeed possible. Once the batteries are inserted, press the button to open the mechanism and remove the batteries. In this case the cat flap will no longer control the chip and will allow the passage of the cat(s) without control. See chapter 12 of the user manual.
