About 2 years ago we had to buy a new one - quite a flop because the manufacturer suddenly fitted an intermediate part between the basket and the bowl. It's such a cumbersome plastic thing. Now my question: Have the manufacturers removed this again?

No. UNFORTUNATELY, not. It's unnecessary, cumbersome, it falls, has to be cleaned, wiped.
