You can sew backpacks with any sewing machine if you use the appropriate materials and cuts.
But yes, this machine is particularly good at sewing thicker fabrics. There is a review of it on YouTube by someone who specialises in making his own and cutting patterns for ultra-light hiking material (i.e. also hiking backpacks).

I haven't tried it yet but I have sewn a cosmetic bag and a tweed skirt with it.
