Between 6 months and 1 year depending on the instructions for use

I've had it for almost 1 year (single person household). I cannot say when to change it. Someone who uses a lot of filters suggested to shake it and if it still sounds like the pebbles are moving it is still good. Not sure how reliable this answer is.
