Is it necessary to keep an ice maker on or plugged into mains all the time; or can you just switch it on shortly before making ice and switch it off thereafter, thereby saving on power, energy consumption and money (especially compared to a fridge or freezer which is on all the time)?

I just plug mine in when I need to make ice. This is not one of those ice makers that is connected to a water mains that makes ice continuously. Hope that helps.
