We were able to observe Mars the other day. It was about the size of a pinhead, but you could see it as a sphere with its reddish colour. Better eyepieces are on our options list. The ones supplied are optically quite weak. For the price, however, the telescope is a great start.
If that is possible, I have not yet found out how. The smartphone with the app is mainly there to navigate in the starry sky. The app shows you where which planet or star is with your movement from the telescope. The app also shows you when you are exactly on the star with the telescope and you should see it through the telescope. The app gives interesting information about the sky and the individual planets.
