If we are talking about the thin quick-release axle, then the total length measured is 185mm.
The effective clamping range is 135 to 160mm, not much more than that, and as your colleague has already pointed out, it also depends on the wheel size and frame width. I had to get an additional axle (different diameter and length) so that I could mount my CUBE road bike.

Which axle are you talking about? I bought it for my boost 148 mountain bike and it just fits, you need to buy an extra axle depending on your rear wheel axle, but be careful, it doesn't fit 29" mountain bike tyres, I had to use an old 27.5" wheel and buy a slick tyre.
