The first 1500 pencil was originally produced in 17 and then 20 degrees of hardness. In 1889, it was awarded a gold medal at the World Exhibition in Paris. As the first manufactured pencil, it was painted yellow and marked with a numbers-letters combination that is still used today to indicate the degree of hardness.
